Abstract

Ángela Herrero Vidal lived through the great desires for change of the 19th century. The contradictions of the 19th-century liberal bourgeoisie also marked the lives of the protagonists. Women’s lives, in particular, experienced the cruelty of these contradictions. Literature reflected these contradictions in Spain as well. Leopoldo Alas Clarin portrayed them in La Regenta. Zamora, Ángela, Ana Ozores, and Vetusta all suffered from these contradictions.
